CSTA NE (Huskers) April Minutes

Present: Steve Carr, Leen-Kiat Soh, Scott Handelman, Kent Steen, Chuck Riedesel, Brent Jarosz, Deb Bulin, Scott Burns, Liz Lorang, Lisa Davis, Austin Schmidt (UNL student), Dorann Avey (North Star High School)

  1. City-Wide Code Event, December 5th, 2015
    1. held at Nebraska Innovation Campus
    2. 2 sections:
      1. rotating 3-4 demonstrations
      2. actual hands-on coding event
    3. Targeting middle and high school students
    4. UNL, Chambers of Commerce, LPS, LNKCodingWomen, and AIM (help finding sponsors for the event)
  2. UNL proposal
    1. Leen-Kiat talked about their proposal and is looking for support from both LPS high school teachers and parochial high school teachers
    2. Seeking a letter of support from CSTA local chapter
  3. NETA formal partnership
    1. Spring conference, CSTA meeting
      1. 4:30 PM Thursday afternoon.
    2. 3 sessions: Deb, Scott, and Brent
    3. One room
    4. One information table
      1. Everybody think about what to have on the table.
      2. Banner? Swags? Pens? CSTA membership brochures from the national survey?
  • Learn from each other? Two-way?
  1. Laptop for them to register to National CSTA.
  2. Google docs for them to fill out a survey — will use what we had before.
  3. Deb, Steve, and Kent will be there; Leen-Kiat on Friday
  • Chuck talked about a “language-independent” exam for CS students (AP CS Principles, AP CS)

    1. Our website has to work. Steve Carr will inform Lloyd Summerer.
    2. Our mission, information about chapter, our goal, meeting date/time at NETA
  • Activities that we have done
  1. Help form other chapters across NE
  2. Leen-Kiat will check with CSE Department Chair on the costs

    1. Leen-Kiat reported on their meeting
    2. Roadmap:
      1. UNL/UNO working on changing the admission requirements.
      2. Project Lead the Way CS to pilot state-wide high school CS.
        1. IT/engineering pathways
        2. Teach the course by the teachers trained by them
  • Alignment of CSTA K-12 CS standards with existing NDE standards
  1. Teaching CS at High Schools in Omaha — Austin Schmidt
    1. Coder Dojo at Omaha
    2. Boys and Girls (North High) clubs
    3. Derek Babb at Omaha North now.
    4. Lisa also mentioned several other possibilities
